Reaching Out

[socialring]
“The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers and cities; but to know someone here and there who thinks and feels with us, and though distant, is close to us in spirit — this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.” ~ Goethe”

In a world with a population of almost 7 billion people, it sounds absurd that any of us could ever feel alone, and yet, at some point in our lives, each of us has somehow felt this way. It’s human nature to want to feel connected to someone else, to feel part of a community, and this is why it can be so painful and difficult when one feels alienated, isolated and alone. The most important thing to remember is that there is a world ready to embrace each and every one of us, a world where we are welcome, a world that is truly home.

The other day I watched an inspirational video of singers joining in song from all across the globe. Some of the singers’ thoughts were shared in the video and what struck me was how this community, albeit a virtual one, was so important to so many individuals. Raising their voices in song, this choir of 2000 voices rang out in a symphony so pure and so true, it move me to my inner core. It was a perfect example of how reaching out to each other could stretch out and touch the heart of those who were not even part of the original community. Somehow, listening to this chorus made me feel connected to each individual. It was simply beautiful.

Reaching out to others through travel is another way people can build community with people across the earth. It’s amazing how perfect strangers can so suddenly feel like family. This is the beauty of travel. It is not only a journey to a foreign place, but it is an inner journey that links you with the heart and spirit of others; and it is for this reason, that travel can be so transformational.

So the next time you are feeling a little isolated and alone, remember there is a world of people out there waiting and wanting to get to know you, all you need to do is take that first step forward and reach out.
