After torrential rains caused flooding that blocked off access to this amazing UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu finally reopened for visitors in April.
Fortunately, the site itself escaped damage; however rail and transportation lines had to be rebuilt in the wake of the floods. Locals celebrated the reopening of the sacred site with Incan ceremonial offerings of gratitude to Pachamama, the Mother Earth, including traditional dancing, music, bonfires and, yes, even hot chocolate!
Machu Picchu is a reverent and important place to the locals for reasons both spiritual and economic. The smiling locals exude the peace of their spiritual heritage, one that is centered around reverence for the earth.
Immersion in the deep rituals and intriguing spirituality of the Incan people gives us a deeper understanding and appreciation for our beautiful earth. And, we must not forget that the locals also rely on tourist dollars to a great degree.
